Trevor's Plan
A Plan for West Michigan by Democrat Trevor Thomas

I will work to ensure that West Michigan attracts investments in advanced batteries. Under the Obama administration, Michigan companies have already received more than $450 million from the Department of Energy to help them build battery plants, which has spurred more than $1 billion in private investment. I will also work to enact legislation that would allow electric vehicle buyers to receive a direct rebate instead of a tax credit to encourage growth of this industry.
Michigan can be a wind energy leader by capturing the wind coming across the Great Lakes. Michigan consumers spend more than a billion dollars to import its energy from other states, so it’s past time that we build up our capacity at home. We need to do so in a sustainable way. This is a good opportunity to continue to make Michigan a leader in wind power. Already more than 30 companies in Michigan manufacture parts for or build wind turbines. I will support an extension of the wind energy tax credit, while exploring other avenues to advance wind power production and use in West Michigan. West Michigan stands to gain thousands of jobs and cut greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency programs. And there’s no better time to enact these programs than today.
I will fight to eliminate the massive subsidies for big oil companies. At a time when we face enormous deficits, and we need to be moving to sustainable energy sources, there is no reason to continue providing more than $40 billion a year in corporate tax breaks to the oil and gas industry. With gas prices sky high, oil companies are making plenty of profits without taxpayer help. I support President Obama’s call to eliminate the following special tax breaks: the use of percentage depletion with respect to oil and gas wells; the ability to claim the domestic manufacturing deduction against income derived from the production of oil and gas; and the expensing of intangible drilling costs.
